Millrace Cohousing is a small 14-unit development along an old hydraulic canal near downtown Goshen, Indiana, a city with a population of about 35,000. Goshen has the charm of a small town but the activities, entertainment, and opportunities of a larger city. The city is home to Goshen College, a private liberal arts college, the annual Elkhart County 4-H Fair and Michiana Mennonite Relief Sale. Our community is a 5-10 minute walk from the public library, Farmer’s Market, city playground, restaurants, a brewery, a co-op grocery store and other conveniences. A nearby footbridge over the waterway provides easy access to a well-developed trail system within the city and beyond. Our development layout includes two rows of single-family homes which face a central corridor of interconnecting sidewalks and a couple rain gardens. Five residences along with the Common House border the canal and nine residences, each with attached garages, line the street. A carport and adjacent parking lot is available for canal-side members and visitors. Our privately owned homes are built and landscaped according to individual tastes and are all energy efficient with accessible design. Although all our members are currently 55 years and older, we dream for an intergenerational community in the future! We expect members to volunteer their time to provide leadership and fill other committee roles. All members are responsible for carrying for and maintaining shared spaces.
