Description

Welcome to Bull City Commons—an eclectic, diverse cohousing community of folks from all over the country. What we have in common is a desire to be part of Durham’s vibrant urban scene and to create a community based on mutual support, collaboration, and shared resources.

Durham, North Carolina (pop 294,000), is dense, neighborly, and easy to get around—more like a town but with all the amenities of the larger metropolitan Triangle, including Chapel Hill and Raleigh. Our 5-story condo building at 610 Trent Drive, completed in 2022, has 23 condo units ranging from 500 to 1400 square feet, with parking and several common areas, including a kitchen/dining room, a shared laundry room, a multipurpose room, lobby/lounge, porch, and a large outdoor garden space complete with native plantings, a grilling area, fire pit, individual raised-bed vegetable gardens and garden shed.

Nestled in the Old West Durham neighborhood, BCC is within walking distance of groceries, cafes, coffee shops, ice cream, an independent bookstore, Duke University campuses, and Duke Gardens. We’re a short drive to nature trails, breweries, restaurants, museums, galleries, and concert and theater venues. Close by are Duke Forest, two state parks along the Eno River, the 22-mile American Tobacco Trail, and the Mountains-to-Sea Trail. The Blue Ridge mountains and NC’s barrier island beaches are both 3-hour drives.

BCC is a self-managed cohousing community, with each resident expected to participate in the monthly plenary (business) meetings in addition to joining one or more of our operational circles. Circles carry out the tasks of managing our finances, coordinating social activities, landscaping the grounds, and maintaining the building’s structure and systems. Our community has adopted a form of dynamic self-governance called Sociocracy—an intentional process that enables all voices in the community to be heard and promotes decision-making by consent. We schedule frequent, optional social gatherings such as weekly meals, monthly potlucks and chef’s dinners, movie and game nights, hikes, and more.

We invite people who are interested in joining BCC to attend a virtual Information Session with Q&A (held bimonthly) and attend an online or in-person Plenary meeting to experience how governing and decision-making process works. Visit our website at www.bullcitycommons.com to RSVP for an Info Session and read our FAQ.
