Description

Bellingham Cohousing is an intentional, multi-generation community in northwest Washington State, founded in 2000. We have 33 homes in 10 buildings clustered on approximately 2.5 acres of a total site of just under six acres, so we live closely while trying to give each other privacy. The remainder of the property includes an orchard, wetlands and a wooded riparian area with a creek running through it. There is a small city park to the east and a greenbelt to the south. It’s a safe place to raise children.

We are a self-managed condominium, with many hard- working committees. A workshare agreement honors individual strengths and gifts. Each resident is encouraged to put in a minimum of 5 hours per month of participation. Decisions are made by consensus at general meetings held once or twice each month.

Housing in Bellingham is expensive so to encourage more financial diversity, we have a couple of rental homes and two ‘permanently affordable’ 2-bedroom units. The other homes vary in size from 780 sq ft (2-bedrooms) to 1600 sq ft (4- bedrooms). We are on a bus line and near a trail and we encourage cycling and ride-sharing.
